Wild Remedy’s Latest Release: ‘Home Song’
Canadian indie folk trio Wild Remedy is making waves with their effervescent single “Home Song,” a preview of their debut EP, ‘Songs From Home.’ This all-female trio from Ottawa creates music that radiates like a beacon of hope, rooted in a love for chilling harmonies and all things folk.
The Essence of ‘Home Song’
Every folk band needs a song about home, and “Home Song” is Wild Remedy’s take. The lyrics, simple yet profound, pay homage to their folk roots while drawing on the dynamic storytelling typical of the indie-folk genre. This near-title track is bound to have audiences tapping and clapping along with its catchy percussion and unforgettable sound.
Meet Wild Remedy
Wild Remedy consists of Amy Russett, Colleen Robertson, and Shay Mahoney, who splits her time between Ottawa and Montreal. Since 2022, the band has been an emerging force in the Canadian folk scene, captivating audiences with their original songs, fresh takes on folk classics, and haunting harmonies. Influenced by genres ranging from alternative pop to folk-rock, gospel to disco, they create a unique sonic blend.
From Stomp-and-Holler to Thoughtful Indie
Wild Remedy’s music ranges from classic stomp-and-holler tracks that make you want to dance, to thought-provoking indie tunes that leave listeners feeling uplifted. Their sound weaves a beautiful tapestry between singer-songwriter offerings, indie pop, and Canadian folk, akin to a collaboration between Joni Mitchell and Boygenius.
The Story Behind ‘Home Song’
Shay Mahoney, reflecting on “Home Song,” shares:
“I initially wrote ‘Home Song’ to poke a bit of fun at our folk genre; every folk band needs a song about ‘home.’ The guitar melody had been in my voice recordings for about six months before the lyrics came to me one night after shooting pool with a friend. I was contemplating how life might have been different had I chosen a different path or stayed in Ottawa after high school. I realized that ‘home’ encompasses more than just a place – it’s found in the people and experiences that make us feel we belong. That’s how ‘Home Song’ was born.”
Upcoming EP: ‘Songs from Home’
Their debut EP, ‘Songs From Home,’ is an honest collection reflecting the realities of growing up and self-discovery, set to dance-worthy rhythms and unforgettable melodies. The EP includes their first singles “What I Did Find” and “Wild Remedy,” along with new folk hits that echo their bright sound and iconic harmonies.
Formation and Rise
The trio met in 2020 and made their local debut in 2022, performing at farmers markets around Ottawa. With Amy’s powerhouse vocals and guitar, Colleen’s smooth alto tones, and Shay’s versatile musicianship, they quickly garnered attention. In 2023, they released their first original singles, produced by Nate Hardy, which earned them a grassroots fanbase.
Breathing Fresh Life into Folk
With their debut EP, Wild Remedy revitalizes the Canadian folk genre, taking listeners on a journey of self-discovery with an inspiring soundtrack that resonates deeply. ‘Songs From Home’ invites listeners to join something truly invigorating and soul-nourishing.
