The Atlanta Braves were the final winless team in all of baseball to begin the 2025 MLB season. Despite much hype and optimism, the Braves lost four straight to the San Diego Padres to begin the year.
Then, the Braves lost two in a row to the Los Angeles Dodgers to begin 0-6, the worst record in all of baseball in a stunning turn of events.
How bad are things for the Braves? Well, one MLB insider pointed out some unfortunate history that does not help the Braves’ chances.
Braves Start Does Not Bode Well in MLB History
Jason Foster of MLB.com pointed out some MLB history that does not bode well for the Braves after the way things started.
“Because I’m sure Braves fans are wondering: No team has ever started a season 0-7 and reached the playoffs. There have been three to start 0-6 and get there, the most recent being the 2011 Rays. Should the Braves lose tonight and reach the postseason, it would be quite historic.”
“A big caveat here is that other playoff-hopeful teams to start 0-7 didn’t have the advantage of a second or third wild card. Still, only two teams to start 0-7 even finished with a winning record: the 1983 Astros (85-77) and the 1980 Braves (81-80),” Foster added.
Not to keep picking on the Braves, but they’re also last in MLB in average (.137), slugging (.220) and OPS (.458), and they’re tied for last in runs (9). Obviously still a small sample size. But there’s literally nowhere to go but up.

It’s not looking good for the Braves early on. Can they turn it around? Sure, but history is certainly not on their side.
The Braves were picked fifth in Pro Football Network’s power rankings before the season began, so it’s safe to say that nobody expected them to start this badly.
If there is a silver lining, they have had to play two of the best teams in the MLB to start the year, with the Dodgers and Padres getting off to undefeated starts.
Braves Issues Continue to Get Worse By the Day
As such, Jurickson Profar was suspended for 80 games by the MLB for PEDs. On April 2, it was revealed that pitcher Reynaldo Lopez was undergoing shoulder surgery and is out for a few months.
The Braves’ bats have also been nowhere to be seen. How bad? Well, they have a .137 average through the first six games. The last Braves team to bat that low over any span of 6 games was in 1942.
The Braves did score seven runs in the first two games of the year against the Padres. However, they scored zero over the final two games of the series and one run apiece in the first two against LA.
