Chad Wackerman, a veteran drummer known for his work with Frank Zappa, James Taylor and more, was put to the test by Drumeo, being tasked with coming up with his own drum parts on the spot for a song he had never heard prior. That track was “Inertiatic ESP“, a 2003 offering by prog rock collective The Mars Volta.
Wackerman‘s introduction to the track came via an altered version that featured the percussion removed, allowing him the chance to create his own parts from a blank slate. If Wackerman looks a bit familiar, he is also the older brother of Brooks Wackerman, drummer for Avenged Sevenfold and more.
If you want to go a bit deeper down the Drumeo rabbit hole, The Mars Volta‘s current drummer Linda-Philomène Tsoungui previously took up the same task, albeit writing parts for Rush‘s “Limelight“.
