The Toronto Blue Jays missed an excellent opportunity to sign their best player to a contract extension this offseason. That player, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., is entering a contract year and could hit free agency next offseason.
The Blue Jays and Guerrero could not agree on an extension this offseason, and negotiations will likely not continue into the regular season. Guerrero Jr. knows he could be up for a massive pay-day if he has a great 2025 season; there may not be a more motivated player in the sport than the Blue Jays first baseman.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Looking for $500 Million
Many people wonder what Guerrero requests for the total dollars in his contract. It appears he wants something around $500 million. That would give him the third-largest contract in baseball.
Guerrero can potentially be one of the five best hitters in baseball. He consistently hits for a high average, and we have seen 40+ home run power in his bat. His best season came in 2021 when he .311 with 48 home runs and 111 RBIs and finished only behind Shohei Ohtani for AL MVP.
In a recent interview with Juancito Sport, Guerrero Jr. said, “If I have a bad year, my floor is 500M..realistically, I’m worth, right now, 200M less than Soto (565M).”

Guerrero has never lived up to the lofty expectations that he set in 2021, but he has still been an elite player. Last season, Guerrero Jr. was once again exceptional. He hit .323 with 30 home runs and 103 RBIs. He finished sixth in AL MVP voting. The Blue Jays would be wise to give him whatever contract he requests.
Blue Jays Hoping to Outperform Expectations
Not many people are expecting a lot from the Blue Jays this season. They are not likely to be a playoff team, and many think they will finish fourth or fifth in the AL East. Part of their issue is a lack of talent around Guerrero Jr.
They have Bo Bichette and newly signed Anthony Santander, but after that, there are a lot of question marks. They have an old pitching staff of veterans on the back end of their careers, like Kevin Gausman, Max Scherzer, and Jose Berrios.
Everything will have to go right for the Blue Jays to be in playoff contention. It seems like the Blue Jays will go as far as Guerrero Jr. will take them.
Guerrero has been to the playoffs three times during his career, but he has not performed well. He has a .136 career batting average in the postseason. That should motivate him to return to the postseason and show he can produce. Keep an eye on a motivated Guerrero, who should be in for another offensive masterclass in 2025.
