Romantic darkness with a touch of witch house
When I listen to Vioflesh’s new song “Feel Fake”, I immediately feel transported into a dark, romantic soundscape. The track from Chile is a multi-faceted blend of dark pop and dark wave, which seems quite shallow to me at first glance – but that’s exactly what makes it a successful introduction for those who might otherwise have little to do with dark wave. The sound remains dreamy and almost floating, and at the same time I feel this touch of witch house, which gives the song something mystical without becoming too esoteric.
What bothers me a bit, though, are the many vocal effects. For my taste, less would have been more here, as I would have liked to hear the raw emotion in the singer’s voice more clearly and undistorted. For me, the effects dilute the authenticity that the lyrics so strongly evoke.
The lyrical content of “Feel Fake” perfectly matches the sound: lines like “Silence is better when the feeling fades” or “You create your own heaven and hell” allow us to delve deep into the topic of inner conflict. It’s about having the courage to break away from what feels wrong and keeping a clear head. I feel a subliminal melancholy that never seems cheesy. Rather, the lyrics reflect the feeling that Vioflesh itself describes as “disconnected in a world that feels fake” – a strong impulse for those who find themselves in an increasingly dehumanised world.
