Unaired Frank Zappa TV Special To Be Released After Over 50 Years
A previously unaired Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention television special from 1974 is finally being released after over 50 years.
The two-hour concert film and companion live album, Cheaper Than Cheep, will be available on May 9 in a CD and Blu-ray set and on vinyl.
On June 21, 1974, Zappa and his band invited fans to their Hollywood rehearsal space for a two-hour performance. Although the show was filmed, Zappa ultimately shelved the project after discovering the audio and video were out of sync.
In its place, The Dub Room Special — produced in collaboration with a Los Angeles PBS station — was aired, while Zappa’s intended TV special remained unreleased for nearly five decades.
Zappa greeted the audience that night with, “We’d like to welcome you to the world’s cheapest television special, which is being manufactured for your edification right here in the midst of our Mothers of Invention rehearsal hall at 5831 Sunset Blvd., Hollywood, California.”
Directed by Ahmet Zappa and produced by Frank Zappa, Vaultmeister Joe Travers and Ahmet Zappa, Cheaper Than Cheep will be available exclusively on Zappa.com, uDiscover Music and Sound of Vinyl.
It will be available in a variety of formats, including a special, limited edition multi-format Super Deluxe box set featuring the concert film on Blu-ray with Dolby Atmos, 5.1 surround and stereo mixes, a companion stereo soundtrack presented on both 2 CD and 180-gram 3 LP picture disc vinyl.
