The Tennessee Titans got their man. With the first overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, the Titans selected Miami Hurricanes QB Cam Ward, hoping he’ll be the franchise quarterback they’ve long been searching for.
It’s been an incredible journey for Ward. Coming out of Columbia High School in Texas as a zero-star recruit, he had no Division I scholarship offers. He ended up at Incarnate Word, where he won the Jerry Rice Award as the nation’s top FCS freshman in 2020. He later transferred to Washington State, where he played for two years before landing at Miami, where he lit up college football.
In 2024, Ward threw for 4,313 yards and 39 touchdowns, setting single-season records at Miami and leading the FBS in passing touchdowns. He also set the NCAA Division I career record for passing touchdowns with 158, breaking Case Keenum’s record.

What Makes Ward the Titans’ QB of the Future?
Ward is far and away the top quarterback prospect in this draft—whether you’re looking at polish or raw talent. He has an unreal arm and a genuine curiosity for the game. As he moved through the college ranks, he consistently improved in everything from ball handling to distribution. He’s a playmaker, can play at tempo, and has a superb deep ball.
It’s been a long time since the Titans have had a true franchise QB. The last was Steve McNair, who was drafted third overall by the then Houston Oilers after starring at Alcorn State, an HBCU. McNair sat for a year before becoming the starter and the face of the franchise, leading the Titans to a Super Bowl appearance in 1999. In 2003, he shared the NFL MVP award with Peyton Manning.
Ward hopes to pick up that mantle and become the leader Head Coach Brian Callahan needs to jump-start the Titans. Callahan has been open about how much he likes Ward, often praising his confidence and playmaking ability.
Ward is an improviser. He has a strong base and can change direction quickly, often crossing up defenses. He’s not yet polished under center and, like most young QBs, needs to work on handling pressure. His mechanics need refinement, and he’ll need to improve how he goes through progressions at the pro level.
Still, his elite arm talent and athleticism made him a no-brainer pick for Tennessee. With strong coaching, a willingness to learn, and some patience, the Titans may have just drafted their next franchise quarterback.
