As they grew older, renowned sisters Beyoncé and Solange developed a close relationship — a connection potentially rooted in a significant choice made by their mother Tina Knowles during their childhood.
During an interview with CNN News Central on Friday (April 25), shortly after the release of her memoir, Matriarch, the entrepreneur shared that she enrolled her daughters in therapy as children, stemming from her “terrified” feeling when Beyoncé reached the age of 10 and a rift began to surface between the sisters. While the “Texas Hold ‘Em” performer was starting her music career with the group Girl’s Tyme, Knowles noted that Solange had difficulty feeling part of the group.
“The kids would tell Solange constantly, ‘Be quiet, Solange,’ as she attempted to choreograph because she wanted to take part,” Knowles remembered. “I began to notice that Beyoncé would permit them to speak to her that way, or she would say, ‘OK, Mom, can you take Solange away?’ And I thought, ‘Hold on, this is her house, and you need to be kind to her.’”

“Eventually, I recognized that they were not hearing me, and I perceived a barrier forming between them,” the designer added. “That’s when I put them in therapy.”
The entire family has progressed significantly since those early days. Following the birth of her first daughter with ex-husband Mathew Knowles in 1981, and then Solange five years later, both daughters have achieved great success in their Grammy-winning music careers while remaining “super tight” due to their time in counseling, as per their mother’s words.
“Back then, it was quite a taboo,” Knowles continued on Friday regarding her choice to seek therapy for her girls. “Even my husband expressed doubts, saying, ‘I just don’t know if they’re too young for that.’ And I responded, ‘I’m not asking. I’m going to find someone.’”
“I found an amazing child therapist,” she added. “Interestingly, he conveyed all the things I had already told Beyoncé, but she heard them from him, even though she despised therapy. Solange, on the other hand, thrived in therapy. She enjoyed sharing her thoughts and feelings, and the results were fantastic.”
Raising two of the music industry’s brightest stars is a key theme in Matriarch, which was released on Tuesday (April 22). In the book, Knowles also discusses her recent battle with breast cancer, which culminated in surgery to remove a tumor late last year.
Regarding her daughters’ responses to the diagnosis, the Cécred cofounder described Bey as having “taken it well, maintaining a positive outlook … I could sense her mind racing, tackling this as a challenge to approach with focus,” while Solange simply asserted with determination, “We will manage this.”
