Fenway Sports Group (FSG) owns the Boston Red Sox, Liverpool FC, the Pittsburgh Penguins, and several other sports organizations. The Red Sox have missed the playoffs for the last three seasons, and many fans across FSG-owned teams have voiced frustration with the group’s management.
One team FSG was reportedly interested in purchasing was the Boston Celtics. However, many Celtics fans were hoping that would not happen. Their concerns were put to rest when it was announced that FSG would not be buying the franchise. The Celtics are coming off an NBA Championship in the 2023-24 season.
Boston Celtics Fans Relieved That Red Sox Owners FSG Didn’t Buy Team
Shams Charania of ESPN reported:
“BREAKING: Bill Chisholm, managing partner at Symphony Technology Group, has agreed to purchase the Boston Celtics from the Grousbeck family for a valuation of $6.1 billion, sources tell ESPN. This is now the largest sale for a sports franchise in North America.”
The Grousbeck family purchased the Celtics for $360 million in 2002. Now, in 2025, they are selling the team for $6.1 billion. Many Red Sox fans — who also happen to be Celtics fans — are thrilled that FSG did not acquire the team.
Keith Smith of Spotrac weighed in on FSG missing out on the Celtics:
“I don’t know much about Bill Chisholm, but the first good news is that he’s from Massachusetts, is a lifelong Celtics fan, and that FSG didn’t buy the team.”
Another Celtics fan shared a similar sentiment.

One fan compared Chisholm buying the Celtics instead of FSG to winning another championship, saying:
“Celtics dodged FSG. That in itself is like another championship.”
Another simply wrote:
“Thank God it wasn’t FSG.”
One fan even reacted with tears of joy after hearing that FSG would not be buying the Celtics.

FSG’s Ownership History Raises Concerns
While Celtics fans are celebrating FSG staying away from their team, the ownership group continues to receive mixed reactions elsewhere.
Liverpool FC is in contention to win the Premier League this season, despite some backlash toward its ownership. Meanwhile, the Red Sox have struggled to reach the postseason, last making the playoffs in 2021 before losing in the ALCS.
The Pittsburgh Penguins, also under FSG’s ownership, are on pace to miss the playoffs for the third straight season.
Given these struggles, Celtics fans feel they dodged a bullet. The franchise, one of the most historic in the NBA, has remained competitive in recent years and is fresh off another championship. Many Boston fans didn’t want to see another city franchise fall under FSG’s control.
Had FSG purchased the Celtics, there likely would have been plenty of backlash. Instead, Boston fans can breathe a sigh of relief as a new chapter begins under Chisholm’s ownership.
