Super Massive is reviving electroclash
As soon as “Caught In A Web” by Super Massive ended, I had to play the song again immediately. This mixture of electroclash and synth pop immediately reminded me of the early 2000s, when bands like “Electrocute” and “Robots In Disguise” shaped the scene. But Super Massive gives this sound a modern update that seems as fresh as it is nostalgic. The first few bars already had me convinced – these warm, analogue synthesiser sounds are simply irresistible.
Malina Hamilton-Smith’s soft vocals strike just the right balance between emotion and coolness. I find it particularly impressive how her voice takes on a certain seductive role without being intrusive. The intro, with the lines “Just lie back / Oh, relax / I know you like it” is almost like an invitation into a hypnotic soundscape and has a subtle double meaning (wink smiley). The theme of the song, this feeling of being caught in an invisible web of connections and manipulations, runs through the lyrics and sound. For me, this is more than just a club track – it’s a soundtrack to our digitally networked world.
Musically, the track has an impressive energy that is discharged in the pulsating bassline. The surf rock flair in the beat gives the song a light, almost summery touch. If you like electronic music with a retro touch and love to dive deep into a world of synths and clever songwriting, then “Caught In A Web” is the track for you.
