Stephen A. Smith has scolded Republicans for their “cult-like” fixation on Donald Trump after the 78-year-old’s former advisor confirmed that he and others are working on ways for him to seek a third term.
Under the current U.S. Constitution, “No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice”, the 22nd Amendment reads. That mean’s Trump’s current term is his last, having previously served between 2017-2021. However, Steve Bannon, who previously served as White House chief strategist, says he expects the current U.S. leader to run for a third term.
The former investment banker, 71, had already talked about how Trump can potentially win a third term despite the constitutional limits, which some of Trump’s supporters have suggested is only meant to apply to two consecutive terms. Now, Bannon has revealed plans to discuss it more publicly within the next few months.
“We’re working on it. I think we’ll have a couple of alternatives,” Bannon was quoted on CUOMO regarding how Trump could overcome term limits. “We’ll see what the definition of term limit is,” he said, before reportedly adding: “I’m a firm believer that President Trump will run and win again in 2028. We’ve had greater long shots than Trump 2028.”
Despite the Constitution’s statement being straightforward when it comes to serving more than two terms, it appears Bannon and Trump’s supporters see otherwise. Reacting to the news on his self-titled show, Smith raged: “What the hell is wrong with you Republicans? What is this fixation, this cult-like allure – an addiction – to Donald Trump?”
“JD Vance is his Vice President, clearly capable of running for the presidency in 2028. Marco Rubio is nothing to sneeze at as our Secretary of State, he’s more than qualified – and will be more than qualified – to run for the presidency of the United States of America,” Smith continued as he rattled off a list of names also suitable for the role.
“Ron DeSantis is the Governor of Florida, he’s another person. Nikki Haley is another person. There’s plenty of people to run for the presidency for the right. This addiction, this fixation on Trump has reached such a degree that you, as a right-winger, who lives on the constitution like so many others on the right, suddenly go and open your mouth and say, ‘we’re working on it’?”
Harvey Levin, host of the 2 Angry Men podcast, dismissed the possibility of repealing the 22nd Amendment when welcoming Bannon onto his show, noting it would require approval from two-thirds of Congress plus ratification by three-quarters of states.
Instead, however, he proposed a more alarming scenario, theorizing that Trump “might declare martial law, suspend the election, and say for the good of the country, he’s staying,” in order to enforce a third term in the White House.

As for Smith, his outburst comes not long after he publicly challenged Trump and Vance to a debate surrounding their “ridiculous” stance on DEI, following the removal of an article highlighting Jackie Robinson’s career in the army from the Department of Defense’s website.
Despite an explanation being given for the article’s removal, it was not well received by Smith, who argued that its deletion was not an “honest mistake.” Speaking on Thursday’s episode of ‘First Take’, he said: “I think that there’s a few things … this present administration is not being honest about. And we have to call it like we see it; there’s this effort, this concerted effort to eradicate DEI.”
