Sonia Citron, after a standout senior year at Notre Dame, was selected as the No. 3 overall pick by the Washington Mystics in the 2025 WNBA Draft.
Citron shot up draft boards during her impressive year at Notre Dame, which saw teammate Olivia Miles tipped as a top pick before her surprising call to stay in college but transfer. She has since joined TCU, with Hannah Hidalgo recently reacting to the news.
While Miles’ future lies in Texas, Citron is heading to D.C. to begin her professional career, being picked after Paige Bueckers was taken No.1 overall by the Dallas Wings then Dominique Malonga was chosen No. 2 by the Seattle Storm.
Then came Citron’s turn, sharing the special moment with family and friends in New York, where she grew up in Westchester.
“I mean its a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and I think what makes it so special is I get to do it in front of my friends and family, since I am from here, so I wouldn’t be here without them. I’m just glad I get to share this moment with them.”
ESPN reporter Holly Rowe took the opportunity to highlight that Citron was being cheered on by her boyfriend, former Notre Dame linebacker Marist Liufau, whom she met in college.
Liufau, now a Dallas Cowboys member in the NFL after being drafted last year, was reminded by Rowe that as a third round pick, No. 87 overall, he couldn’t match his girlfriend’s achievement.

Rowe quipped: “Your boyfriend Marist is here – for the record, you got drafted higher than he did in the NFL. So shout out to the girls..”
Liufau took it in stride, laughing and applauding the comment, beaming with pride. Citron chimed in: “I”m just grateful for all their support, all the time they invested in me.
My family, my friends, my coaches, they believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself and I wouldn’t be here without them.
“I’m just going to keep working hard, keep trying to get better. I have amazing women to learn from in the league. I’m going to keep trying to play both sides of the ball and just be myself.”
