In the Latest Episode of Rock and Roll for Grownups:
Denny Somach returns with another episode filled with the songs and stories that defined generations of rock music lovers. Episode 11 offers a perfect blend of well-known classics and the untold stories behind them. Denny kicks off with a trio of unforgettable tracks, starting with Doctor My Eyes by Jackson Browne, Don’t Look Back from Boston, and Let My Love Open the Door by Pete Townshend.
As always, Denny brings his insider knowledge to the table, sharing the story of Carmine Appice, mentor to Led Zeppelin’s John Bonham, as remembered by Phil Ehart of Kansas. And what better way to illustrate that influence than by seguing into Kansas’ Carry On Wayward Son?
But it doesn’t stop there. The episode features a wide variety of tracks, including I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll by Joan Jett, a song with a surprising backstory. Denny reveals that Joan Jett’s iconic anthem was actually a cover of a 1975 track by the Arrows, inspired by the Rolling Stones’ It’s Only Rock ‘n Roll (But I Like It). The music deep dive continues with The Clash’s politically charged London Calling.
The journey through the history of rock doesn’t end with the ‘70s and ‘80s. We travel further back in time with Come Together by The Beatles, featuring John Lennon’s distinct vocals, followed by the summer anthem In the Summertime by Mungo Jerry. Denny rounds out the episode with BB King’s soulful blues number The Thrill Is Gone, reminding us how diverse the rock and roll genre can be.
Finally, the episode wraps up with three power-packed tracks: Waterloo Sunset by The Kinks, Subdivisions by Rush, and Layla by Derek and the Dominos, with Eric Clapton and Duane Allman creating the unforgettable riff battle.
As always, Denny leaves listeners with a classic to close the show, this time selecting Rockin’ in the Free World by Neil Young.
