Weezer took advantage of their unexpected slot at Coachella to inform their fans that the band is in the process of creating a film.
The rock band from Los Angeles was added to the lineup for Saturday (April 12) of the festival’s first weekend, stepping in after FKA Twigs and Anitta canceled their performances owing to “ongoing visa complications” and “unforeseen personal reasons,” respectively. Ed Sheeran will also perform but on the second weekend, taking the stage on Saturday afternoon (April 19).
Their performance came shortly after bassist Scott Shriner’s wife incurred non-life-threatening injuries in a strange encounter with officers from the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) that culminated in a fierce shootout. The band’s set, consisting of 12 songs, excluded any tracks released after 2008. Nonetheless, right before they performed the 1994 hit “Undone – The Sweater Song,” frontman Rivers Cuomo disclosed that the group has been engaged in filmmaking recently.
“We’ve been hard at work on the Weezer movie back in LA the last couple weeks,” Cuomo informed the audience. “However, when Coachella reached out to us, asking, ‘Hey Weezer, can you come out for a surprise appearance?,’ we said, ‘Absolutely!’ It feels great to be here with all of you and express these feelings.”

As shared by fans online, it appears that members of the Weezer fan club had received messages informing them that the band would be “conducting a private filmed merchandise signing for a select few fans, for an upcoming video.” Furthermore, it was mentioned that “chosen participants will need to sign a release and NDA before showing up,” with April 21 being indicated as the filming date.
In other news, fans on X (previously Twitter) also posted an image of a “Notice of Filming” that had surfaced in Los Angeles for a scripted feature film. The film, reportedly titled Weezer: Security Threat, named Watch Me Unravel LLC as the production company (which derived its name from a lyric in “Undone – The Sweater Song”), and advised those in attendance that the three-day shoot from April 7-9 would involve “simulated bullet effects,” “atmospheric smoke,” and more.
Although few details have been made public by Weezer, it establishes them as the third Californian band to be the subject of an unconventional film project in recent years. While Stockton’s Pavement is set to be the centerpiece of the genre-blurring Pavement from director Alex Ross Perry, Rodeo trio Green Day is currently in the process of filming New Years Rev, a project inspired by the band and their life on the road in a tour van.
