Veteran cornerback Jaire Alexander and veteran offensive lineman Elgton Jenkins are not present or participating during the Green Bay Packers‘ first organized team activity (OTA) session open to the media on Wednesday, according to Matt Schneidman of The Athletic.
Both players are absent due to contract issues. Alexander and the Packers are attempting to figure out a restructured contract that would keep him in Green Bay for the 2025 season, while Jenkins — who is moving from left guard to center — wants a reworked deal to protect him as he makes a position change.
OTAs are voluntary, but both Alexander ($700,000) and Jenkins ($500,000) have offseason workout bonuses tied to participation during the program. It’s likely both players have already missed enough of the program to miss out on their respective bonuses.
Alexander’s offseason saga still has no resolution, although reporting from Schneidman this week suggested a reconciliation is a growing possibility. But Alexander’s contract still needs to be adjusted to make it work, and nothing is done on that front as of Wednesday.
Jenkins is entering an important 2025 season contractually given his enormous 2026 cap hit. Moving to center — a less lucrative position — could hurt his future earning power, so he likely wants assurance from the Packers before the 2025 season.
Neither player wants to be on the field for voluntary work and suffer an injury, which could drastically alter contract negotiations.
Per Schneidman, rookies John Williams (seventh-round pick) and Tyron Herring (undrafted free agent) are also not participating on Wednesday.
Coach Matt LaFleur is expected to answer questions from the media following OTAs on Wednesday.
