On “October,” Ziggy 2000 is touted as the love child of Elliott Smith and Beabadoobea. There are hints of both artists on this moving and highly emotional single in lyrical content and vocal style. The self-proclaimed ‘rag doll’ and candy princess draws the listener in with an endearing fragile vulnerability. Juxtaposing that quality is an inner strength that is admirable and commands respect.
Ziggy 2000 emotes with a rather slight voice that is hushed, quiet, and delicate. The moving guitar lines accompanying the track are strong and melodic but never overpower or overshadow Ziggy 2000’s singing.
The video for “October” finds Ziggy holding a bunch of flowers close to her chest. She is wearing a bra and sheer white boho skirt and freely dances and spins against a dark background with graffiti walls around her. It seems like she is letting go of love through this fervent and rhythmic movement. Yet, simultaneously, she clutches the flowers as if they are protecting her from contradictory feelings. Then she holds the flowers down by her sides and dances as she moves faster. “October,” like Ziggy 2000’s liberating and freeing dance, mirrors the balancing act of love. It does not always work out despite one’s best efforts. The near end of a relationship is filled with mixed emotions for Ziggy 2000, portrayed vividly in the single and symbolically in the video.
