No, Dropkick Murphys Were Not Banned From X for Calling Out Concertgoer’s “MAGA” Hat
During a recent concert, in Boston, Dropkick Murphys frontman Ken Casey criticized President Donald J. Trump and X owner Elon Musk while also calling out an attendee who was wearing a white “Make America Great Again” hat. According to footage, shared by the band online, Casey called the black version of the “MAGA” hat, worn and popularized by Musk, the “Elon Musk true Nazi edition,” while also suggesting that the president’s supporters are in a “cult.” In addition, he exclaimed, “This is America. There’s no kings here!”
The incident has led to speculation and reporting that Dropkick Murphys were banned from X due to Casey’s comments and broadly left-leaning, anti-Trump political beliefs. And, while @dropkickmurphys is currently suspended from the Musk-owned platform formerly known as Twitter, the account has actually been gone for a while.
“We broke up with [Elon Musk] first,” Ken Casey said in a statement shared with Pitchfork. “We quit Twitter in 2022 when he was only half a Nazi.”
“Then someone else took our handle, pretending to be our official account, so we filed a legal complaint to put a stop to that—which is why @dropkickmurphys shows as suspended,” Casey continued. “Look, we pulled our account because we didn’t want to be part of that guy’s empire. But if we were still on there, I’m sure he would have suspended us by now.”
Dropkick Murphys are among a swath of musicians to exit X due to the ownership of Elon Musk, who has faced recent criticism for, among other things, making a gesture at a Trump inauguration event that “looked a lot like the salute used in Nazi Germany and fascist Italy,” as The New York Times described it. Others who have boycotted X include Jack White, Neil Young, and Nine Inch Nails mastermind Trent Reznor.
