Night Motor
I Don’t Wanna Be Saved (Self-Released) DL | ST
Released: 25th March 2024
Night Motor return with a new single.
Ahead of their second album, Vessels, which will be released on 29th April, Night Motor have released a single and accompanying video. I Don’t Wanna Be Saved, sees the garage post-punk band heading in a darker direction with hints of ’80s goth and dark disco.
Starting with a great bass and drum beat, the vocals then cut in urgently and aggressively, very much like Peter Coyne of The Godfathers. It builds up to a chorus that is demanding and anxious, with a middle eight that thumps like a beating heart getting out of control. It’s a song about those people who we just can’t reach, even though we know how much they are suffering, and the almost inevitable consequences of pushing all help away. At the end of the song the beating drum just stops in a way that is all too final.
The band have been touched by tragedy, having lost their friend, Jim McGregor of the band Brunel, to suicide a few years back. The statistics for male suicide are appalling: in 2022 3,909 men took their own lives. This is three times the female suicide rate.
Since releasing their debut album in 2021, Fatal, which we reviewed here, the band have been through a number of line up changes and disruption. It’s good to see the new line-up has a mix of young and old, all looking cool (the drummer, Hans Ralph, in particular oozing style) in their own way.
The band promise that the new album will be a walk on the darker side compared to their first album. Louder Than War look forward to reviewing it.
