Bengals’ Chase: My call on playing with no deal
CINCINNATI — Bengals wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase said he will be a game-time decision for Sunday’s season opener against the New England Patriots amid what he called an “aggravating” contract dispute.
Chase broke his silence Friday and said he would be willing to play this season even if the two sides cannot agree to an extension. But whether he steps on the new turf at Paycor Stadium on Sunday will be up to him.
“It’s my decision,” said Chase, whom the Bengals listed as questionable to play.
Chase isn’t the only Bengals wide receiver who could be out Sunday. Tee Higgins has been listed as doubtful after he suffered a hamstring injury Thursday.
Chase was suited up for practice Friday, marking three straight days of participation after he did not practice throughout training camp and skipped Monday’s workout before the official game week started Tuesday.
He indicated that the two sides are close to a deal and have made progress recently. Chase said he had a deadline of Friday to come to an agreement.
“It’s a small chance, but who knows what’ll happen then, these next couple hours?” Chase said.
Throughout the offseason, other wide receivers have received significant contract extensions, including those in his 2021 draft class as well as the Minnesota Vikings‘ Justin Jefferson, Chase’s former college teammate at LSU and good friend. Asked about a report that Chase wanted to top Jefferson’s $140 million deal by one cent, he bristled at that sentiment.
“If I want to beat Justin, I’m gonna beat the s— out of Justin,” Chase said. “Not by a penny, brother.”
Chase said that he hadn’t asked for a new deal and that the Bengals had told him before the offseason that they intended to extend his contract. However, he added that even if the team had not made that suggestion, he still would have sought an extension on a rookie deal that runs through the end of 2025.
In terms of what Chase wants in a deal, he said his stance hasn’t moved.
“I mean, nothing really changed,” Chase told ESPN. “Justin and CeeDee [Lamb] set the market. The market’s been set. It’s written for me, not me writing it.”
Chase said some aspects of the guaranteed money and average annual value were still a priority for him. But just as in his last public comments, in January, he wasn’t willing to give too much away.
“I’m not going to give you word for word, but some of it,” Chase said.
Steelers’ Wilson limited in practice, iffy to start
PITTSBURGH — Despite naming Russell Wilson as the starting quarterback a week ago, the Steelers enter their Week 1 game in Atlanta without clarity at the position as he’s listed as questionable.
After aggravating his training camp calf injury during an early individual period of Thursday’s practice, casting doubt on his availability to start Sunday’s season opener against the Falcons, Wilson expressed optimism Friday while remaining noncommittal about his status.
“I just felt a little tight,” Wilson said. “I just wanted to be smart about it. Obviously, we play the game on Sunday. I’m hoping I get to be in it, obviously, but just trying to get ready to go.
“I’m trying to get my body ready to go and rock and roll, so we’re doing everything we can.”
Justin Fields will start if Wilson, who was very limited in Friday’s practice, doesn’t play Sunday.
Coach Mike Tomlin on Thursday expressed confidence in Fields’ ability if he’s called upon.
Wilson, who declined to share which calf was injured, said additional evaluation Thursday revealed “good news” about the severity of the aggravation.
“It wasn’t something worse, extremely worse or anything like that, so that was good news,” Wilson said. “I’ve got to be smart and obviously we’re trying to play 20 to 21 games, so I’m trying to play in all [of them], obviously, and that’s kind of my mentality, and how we want to go about it.”
Wilson said his participation Sunday could come down to pregame warmups and proper care in the days leading up to the game.
“The most important thing is just tons of treatment and getting ready to see what I can do each day and take [it] day by day,” Wilson said.
While Wilson and the staff continue to monitor the veteran quarterback’s injured calf, Fields is taking the same steady approach he always follows leading up to games, no matter his position on the depth chart. That’s a lesson he learned early on in Chicago.
“I have the same process every week,” Fields said. “I learned my rookie year how fast things can change. I remember my third game, rookie season, Andy Dalton, he was just running out of bounds and looked like a normal play, and he tweaked his knee and then right then and there I was in. So I always prepare like I’m a starter. … You just never know what can happen.”
Wilson initially sustained the nagging injury on the eve of training camp during the team’s new conditioning test when he took a rep hitting a sled. As a result, he didn’t throw a pass in a live team period for 10 practices and missed the first preseason game.
Asked if he regretted or was frustrated about the circumstances surrounding his injury and its ripple effects, the 35-year-old Wilson deflected.
“Listen, I think the game of football is — I’ve been very fortunate over my whole career to not have many injuries,” Wilson said. “I think the most important thing though is just … it’s unfortunate, but we respond, right?
“We got to react and respond, and my head’s up and [I’m] ready to do everything I can to be ready to go. I think that’s really my focus. It’s not on anything before.”
Fields, who started the preseason opener, said he took first-team reps in team periods Friday, but he had also rotated in with the starters earlier in the week. Because of that additional training camp work with the starting offensive line and skill players, Fields expressed confidence in his ability to lead the group Sunday.
“Yeah, just me talking to the guys in the huddle, me getting reps with [George Pickens], Van [Jefferson], Calvin [Austin III], Scotty [Miller], and those guys. … We all feel very comfortable with each other, playing with each other.”
Rookies Roman Wilson and Logan Lee are listed as out for Sunday’s game, as is guard Isaac Seumalo.

Eddie Hearn: ‘There isn’t a lot between Canelo and Berlanga’
Promoter Eddie Hearn has described Edgar Berlanga’s upcoming fight with superstar Saul “Canelo” Alvarez as an opportunity to be taken, one that couldn’t be turned down.
Puerto Rico’s Berlanga, 27, may be happy to have landed a dream shot at Canelo’s super middleweight titles on Sept. 14 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. But that dream could be far from reality as Berlanga faces a tall order against arguably boxing’s best bet in Alvarez.
Although the odds are against him, Hearn, chairman of Matchroom Boxing and Berlanga’s promoter, believes his fighter is ready to make his chance count.
“You never know if you’re ready for a fighter like Canelo Alvarez until you get in there because the problem is, he’s so elite,” Hearn told DAZN. “He [Berlanga]’s got a big heart. He’s got big belief, and he’s ready to perform on Sept. 14. It’s Mexico against Puerto Rico.”
Berlanga (22-0, 17 KOs) made a case for himself after stopping Ireland’s Padraig McCrory in six rounds last February. The emphatic win made Berlanga the WBA’s mandatory challenger at 168 pounds, with possible fights against Mexico’s Jaime Munguia and Christian Mbilli of France falling through.
Berlanga was then chosen by Canelo as his Mexico’s Independence Day fight night opponent. Since the announcement of the fight, Berlanga and Canelo have engaged in a war of words, with the former vowing to use his jab and ring IQ to trouble the latter.
“There isn’t a lot in the gap between both fighters,” Hearn said. “And maybe Edgar could afford a Munguia or Mbilli, but they weren’t there and they didn’t happen. When you get the opportunity as mandatory, you’ve gotta take it.”
Hearn took the opportunity to announce that undefeated Diego Pacheco is on course to face the winner of Canelo-Berlanga following his sixth-round KO win over Maciej Sulecki last Saturday. Pacheco (22-0, 18 KOs) made it 10 stoppage victories in his last 11 fights after Sulecki was counted out from body shots that sent him to the canvas.
“I look at it a little bit like Diego,” Hearn said. “He’s gonna be mandatory to the Canelo Alvarez-against-Berlanga winner. He probably needs that friction fight, but you never know until you’re in the deep end.”

Bonobo – Expander :: Indie Shuffle
Everyone stand back, Bonobo is taking out the sharpest blade with “Expander.”
“Expander” is a sharpened, smooth sword of a track, jumping in and out of whizzy ninja tune stylings and some sweaty speedy samples. It goes for everyone’s hearts and it doesn’t miss. The build is actual insanity and when it dropped I was swinging away with no need to slow down.
Bonobo has not only come back into the fold with a track that gives me so much juice, but has also reinvigorated my love for those urban subsections of club tracks — the glitch pops, drum and bass and those speedy little trip tracks.
Bonobo’s “Expander” is a mythic experience.

William Scull-Vladimir Shishkin IBF Title Fight Eyed For Oct. 19 In Falkansee, Germany – The Ring
William Scull-Vladimir Shishkin IBF Title Fight Eyed For Oct. 19 In Falkansee, Germany
The one void left at super middleweight will be filled very soon.
The Ring has learned that a date was secured for the William Scull-Vladimir Shishkin vacant IBF 168-pound title fight. Their ordered clash will take place on Oct. 19 in Falkansee, Germany. The event will be a co-promotion between Agon Sports and Kuc Boxing.
Scull and Shishkin previously agreed to terms for a bout to claim the belt left behind by Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez (61-2-2, 39 knockouts). The title was dropped by Alvarez—The RING/WBA/WBC/WBO champ—for refusal to honor his mandatory versus Scull.
Heavyweight’s Dusan Veletic (8-1-1, 5 KOs) and Sanel Hasanovic (7-1-1, 6 KOs) will appear on the undercard. There is conflicting info as to whether they will be in separate bouts (as listed on BoxRec.com) or face each other.
Scull (22-0, 9 KOs) became the IBF mandatory challenger after a July 2022 unanimous decision win over Evgeny Shvendenko. He’s just three times since then, including a slot on the Alvarez-Jaime Munguia undercard in May.
The placement was intentional, as the expectation was for Alvarez to honor his mandatory soon thereafter. The IBF ordered the fight but talks never progressed. A purse bid hearing was canceled when the sanctioning body was informed that an agreement was reached.
That agreement turned out to be Alvarez moving on to a Sept. 14 date with WBA mandatory Edgar Berlanga (22-0, 17 KOs) and relinquishing the IBF title.
Scull and Shishkin (16-0, 10 KOs) were then ordered to enter talks. The threat of a purse bid surfaced. However, AGON Sports and Salita Promotions—representing Scull and Shishkin, respectively—were able to reach an agreement.
Shishkin, The Ring’s No. 5-rated super middleweight, became a contender after a Dec. 2022 decision win over former IBF titlist Jose Uzcategui (UD 12).
