New Artist Of The Week : Grow
We say
Grow can only grow…much bigger with this stunning debut. With the classic sounding slice of dramatic indie, Halifax 4 piece Grow sounds fully formed. The piano driven track oozes melody and ambition that far outstrips their years that has the big vistas of Neil Young and the theatrical songwriting of mid seventies Bowie and somehow sounds like a long lost classic you have never heard before but from this very moment in time.
Niamh Robinson review of the band…
Halifax four piece Grow, featuring Jack Wilson, Harry Shackleton, Luke Bradley and Isaac Brierley, are the first band to be signed to Grayston Unity Records. The independent label has been set up by The Grayston Unity in Halifax, where many musicians have performed to an eager, local music-loving crowd.
The label hopes to propel young promising talent and Grow are precisely that. Their debut single, Your Own Time, is a five minute melodic, bluesy note to nostalgia. The lyrics reflect the notion of moving but being scared to do so, with lines such as “tepped outside ready to depart” and “bags packed and you’re heading south” juxtaposed with “you fall straight into the dark” and “I don’t know if you’ll make it out”. It’s a feeling that is, perhaps, relatable to many who come from small towns like Halifax.
An allegro piano melody follows the lyrics throughout, reminiscent of Bowie. The song was built around the introductory piano part, which was inspired by the song ‘Helpless’ by Neil Young. Out of the songs on the EP, it was probably the song that most benefited from the studio due to the extra layers of instrumentation and input from producer JB Pilon It was recorded at Buffalo Studio, also known as The Chairworks, in Castleford.
The track has already been highly regarded by Gordon Raphael, who famously worked and produced with The Strokes. “I’m super impressed and it’s about one of the most enjoyable things I’ve heard in a long time. So good to hear a keyboardist featured in modern music! […] Put(s) a big smile on my face.” The track is released on 24th January and is the first of four lively singles from your new favourite indie rock band.
