Rapper Nelly will not face drug charges after he was arrested in a St. Louis-area casino in August.
“We don’t believe the facts in this case warrant the issuing of charges,” Chris King, a spokesperson for the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, said in a statement.
Nelly, whose legal name is Cornell Haynes II, was arrested on August 7 on an outstanding warrant for no proof of insurance, and state police alleged that he had four “ecstasy pills,” according to a state police report and Nelly’s lawyer.
Nelly’s attorney, Scott Rosenblum, says the St. Louis native was cuffed and paraded through the casino after winning a jackpot when the arresting officer falsely told him they needed to run a background check before paying him out.
That’s when the warrant was discovered. Rosenblum also states that the arresting officer searched Nelly without probable cause and claimed to have found the drugs among his belongings.
Nelly’s popular tracks include “Ride Wit Me,” “Dilemma” featuring Kelly Rowland, and smash hit “Hot in Herre.” Nelly has won three Grammy Awards, three American Music Awards, and seven Billboard Music Awards, among others.
