In this First Concert Ever segment, the alternative pop artist, Makena, talks about the story of her first experience with live music. You can check out the story below:
The first concert I ever attended was Britney Spears’ iconic “Dream Within a Dream” Tour. At the tender age of 4, I walked into the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado, hand in hand with my dad, ready to see my hero—my favorite artist. I was obsessed with Britney growing up; she’s the reason I fell in love with music. I would belt out her songs from the back seat of my parents’ car, memorizing every lyric. One day, while out for dessert with my dad, we stumbled upon a local restaurant hosting a karaoke night. I begged to sing “Lucky” by Britney Spears, and my dad, always resourceful, ran to the car to grab her CD. Since I couldn’t read yet, I sang along with Britney, and from that moment, I was hooked. I knew I was destined to perform.
My parents, always supportive, enrolled me in singing lessons and surprised me with tickets to see Britney live. My dad took me to the show, and though I was only 4 years old, I vividly remember the life-changing experience. The performance was spectacular—Britney, the dancers, the stage, the music—it all left me in awe. The production was out of this world, and her dance routine in the rain was unforgettable. I was mesmerized by everything—the artistry, the energy, the magic.
One of my favorite memories from that night was standing in line to buy my first-ever concert t-shirt. That feeling of excitement, of sharing that moment with my dad, will always be special to me. He’s always been my biggest supporter, and I love that we shared this experience together. My passion for music and attending concerts comes from him, and I’ll always cherish the memory of that night.
