Brooklyn-based artist M Wagner, or Matthew Wagner, introduces his debut single “Release Yrself” alongside the announcement of his upcoming album “We Could Stay,” set to be released on May 17th. Wagner’s work showcases a blend of electronic sounds reminiscent of The Field, alongside influences from artists like Vladislav Delay and Wolfgang Voigt.
“Release Yrself” and the album “We Could Stay” reflect Wagner’s personal experiences, utilizing field recordings as a base, which are then manipulated to create textured, layered compositions. This approach positions the album as a reflection of Wagner’s journeys and observations.
Wagner’s background in classical music deeply influences his work, incorporating elements from composers such as Gustav Mahler and Igor Stravinsky into an electronic framework. This fusion of classical and electronic elements adds complexity to his music, allowing for a unique listening experience. Tracks like “Rome Generator” exemplify Wagner’s talent for transforming everyday sounds into compelling musical components.
The album does not shy away from addressing contemporary issues, with song titles hinting at environmental concerns. Yet, it maintains an optimistic outlook, partially influenced by Wagner’s exposure to the PC Music scene during his time at Goldsmiths in London. Interactions with figures like A.G. Cook have introduced pop sensibilities into his music, blending distortion and experimental pop structures.
M Wagner’s “We Could Stay” combines classical music influences with electronic production, creating an album that stands as a distinct presence in the electronic genre. The album invites listeners to explore a blend of historical and modern musical styles, presented through Wagner’s personal and observational lens.
