EBM vibes and electroclash energy: Kompromat impresses with “Lift Me Up”
Sometimes I discover a song that grabs me immediately, and Lift Me Up by Kompromat is one of those songs. The French masters of EBM, Synth Pop and Electroclash, consisting of Vitalic & Rebeka Warrior (Sexy Sushi, Mansfield.TYA), have created a track that, for me, is an exciting tightrope walk between clarity and chaos. The driving, fat electro beat forms the basis, but what really makes the track special are the contrasts.
First, there are the familiar female vocals, which seem gentle, almost delicate – a mixture of French and English passages that sound to me like a love letter to the romance of club nights. In stark contrast to this are the dirty synthesizers in the chorus, which give the song exactly what I want from modern electronic music: edges and moments of surprise. The sound remains very clean and clear, which gives the dirty synths all the more room to unfold their effect.
I find the bridge in the middle of the song particularly strong. Right at the point where many tracks could sag, Lift Me Up really turns up the heat. The energy is cranked up again, and I felt like the track was literally pushing me forward. The mix of EBM and electroclash is really unusual, but it works here. To me, it sounds modern and nostalgic at the same time, almost like a tribute to the wild times of the genres.
