Cooper Flagg is putting together a historic freshman season at Duke, and the NBA world is watching closely. Scouts are comparing him to Jayson Tatum and Kawhi Leonard when discussing his NBA ceiling.
Flagg’s time with the Blue Devils has proven he can compete at the highest level, but he was already shining on the national stage before arriving at Duke. In 2024, he earned a spot on the USA Basketball Men’s Select Team, where he scrimmaged against the U.S. men’s national team ahead of the Paris Olympics. During the exhibition, he impressed one of the league’s biggest stars.
Cooper Flagg Caught Kevin Durant’s Eye During Paris Olympics
While only 17 during the scrimmage, Flagg nearly led the select team to a comeback victory over a group of the NBA’s best players. One highlight that took social media by storm was Flagg confidently draining a 3-pointer over former Los Angeles Lakers star Anthony Davis after dribbling off a screen.
Anyone unfamiliar with Flagg’s talent before the game knew his name afterward. Even Phoenix Suns star Kevin Durant admitted it was when he realized Flagg was the real deal.
“He looked like a hell of a player, somebody that is only going to get better with more experience,” Durant said.
The U.S. national team fended off a late comeback attempt to win 74-73, but the real story was Flagg’s performance down the stretch. After the game, basketball icon LeBron James — who Flagg called his idol — showed his respect. Durant continued to rave about Flagg and his professionalism.
“He’s 17 years old, coming in and playing like he’s almost a vet. No emotion. He’s just out there doing his job. That’s a good sign.”
The Maine native has been incredible during his first year in Durham. He is averaging 18.9 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 4.2 assists, adding 1.4 steals and 1.3 blocks per game. The ACC named him the conference’s Player of the Year and a Consensus First-Team All-American.
NBA stardom seems inevitable for Flagg, as his all-around game translates perfectly to the next level. Multiple teams are hoping to win the draft lottery and “Capture the Flagg.”
Many fans have speculated that Flagg will return to Duke for a sophomore season. However, he will be the sure-fire No. 1 pick in the NBA Draft, so it is doubtful his college career will extend. Still, Flagg focuses on leading his team to a national championship, beginning with the Blue Devils’ Final Four matchup against Houston on April 5.
