Kelsea Ballerini Shares Reasons for Leaving Twitter and Reddit Following a ‘Toxic Phase’

On Kelsea Ballerini’s latest album, Patterns, she delved into and reflected upon various behavioral patterns present in her life, with the project’s music narrating her experience of either adapting to or breaking away from those patterns as necessary.

In an interview with People, Ballerini discussed another aspect of her life that she felt needed change—her engagement with social media. During a recent performance, she candidly shared with her audience that she still tends to read comments posted about her online regularly, but she has had to revise her approach to certain online platforms.

“I eliminated Twitter quite a while back. That proved to be beneficial. Twitter really impacted me,” Ballerini expressed to the publication. “I found myself on Reddit. I went through a rather toxic phase with that, particularly when my life was somewhat tumultuous. Then I realized, ‘We need to establish some boundaries.’ So that’s not a part of my routine anymore.”

Currently, she reports that she mainly turns to Instagram and TikTok. “Even that feels overwhelming at times, but I’m unsure how to step back because I’m inclined to please others, and I appreciate the feedback,” she mentioned. “I believe my motivation stems from my desire for feedback and for adjusting set lists, or modifying elements of the tour based on what I see on TikTok. But yes, I’m a woman. I’m sensitive. I’m an artist. If I encounter a harsh comment, it impacts me.”

Ballerini has been open about the positive effects of therapy, stating that collaborating with a therapist has aided her in addressing her inclination to appease others. “My therapist once advised me, ‘Kelsea, you need to focus more on what matters less,’” Ballerini recalled, adding that she’s become less emotionally affected by negative online comments compared to before. “Though I still value that feedback, I no longer assign it the weight I once did.”

She asserts that engaging in the challenging work to maintain her emotional and mental wellness involves embracing both the highlights and the less favorable traits of herself.

“I’m quite conscious of my shortcomings. I acknowledge them, and I actively work on evolving and maturing in specific areas,” she shared. “Simultaneously, I wholeheartedly embrace and celebrate who I am in this moment. I don’t believe I’ve ever truly been able to do that before, as I’ve had to navigate through life. One must understand themselves before truly loving themselves — and I had much to learn.”

This personal development has also translated into professional growth, with Patterns achieving her first No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart last year, while her Kelsea Ballerini Live on Tour 2025 tour has been successfully filling arenas nationwide. She also recently received her first ACM entertainer of the year nomination in anticipation of the upcoming Academy of Country Music Awards on May 8.
