Kai Trump, the granddaughter of U.S. President Donald Trump, quipped that she would try and make her round of golf with superstar as “short as possible” as they enjoyed an amusing exchange at Torrey Pines.
The pair took part in a practice round in the lead up to the Genesis Invitational in February in rare rainy conditions in California. Footage from their encounter has now been released by young Trump, who is the daughter of Donald J. Trump Jr. and ex-wife Vanessa.
They came together to raise money for the TGR Foundation and California Rises in the aftermath of the devastating Californian Wildfires earlier this year. McIlroy and Trump appeared to enjoy their short time together at Torrey Pines too as they braced a downpour while enjoying a wide-ranging conversation.
At one point Trump acknowledged that she would try and keep the round brief, laughing: “You can see way up here, it’s perfect, yeah seriously, makes my life a lot easier. It’s gonna be a long day, though,” she continued, before McIlroy replied: “I know, as the youngster then said: I’m going to make this as fast as possible, before the Northern Irishman added: Just keep making birdies, that’s one way to play quick.
The 17-year-old boasts a significant social media following, including over a million subscribers on her YouTube channel. At the time of writing the video alongside world No.2 superstar McIlroy has proved a significant hit with viewers too, with over 180 viewers having tuned in to watch it within a day of it being posted.
In August, the aspiring golfer confirmed she would be playing collegiate golf at the University of Miami next year. She said: “I am beyond excited to announce my verbal commitment to the University of Miami. I would like to thank my mom, Vanessa, and my dad, Don, for always supporting me through my journey.”

McIlroy has also enjoyed a round of golf with Kai’s grandfather, the U.S. president, as they appeared to strike up an understanding. Reflecting on this, President Trump later said: “I played golf with him three weeks ago, he’s really a fantastic player. He has good form, too. When he played with me he played very well.”
Meanwhile, Trump backed the Northern Irishman to go all the way at the Players Championship, asserting: “Rory is one of the favorites. He’s always going to be one of the favorites. He’s a very talented guy [and] he’s a very good person too.”
Returning the compliment, the four-time major championships victor welcomed Trump’s recent involvement in talks over a prospective merger between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf, he said: The President, he can do a lot of things,” McIlroy said of Trump following their round of golf
“He has direct access to Yasir [Al-Rumayyan]’s boss [Mohammed bin Salman]. Not many people have that. Not many people can say, ‘I want you to get this deal done and by the way, I’m speaking to your boss, I’m going to tell him the same thing’…..”He [Trump] can be influential.”
