Retread, drift, a track from Juliana Day’s debut album lull, brings together haunting field recordings and the low, resonant tones of a whistle captured within the stillness of an empty church. Evocative and atmospheric, the track builds around layered textures and a delicately haunting melody, adding depth and movement as it develops.
Commissioned by NFOJAiM and released on New Jazz and Improvised Recordings, lull examines moments of transition and in-betweens—places, journeys, and stages of life. Across seven tracks, Day explores both rest and introspection, as well as change and uncertainty. Drawing inspiration from minimalism, choral, and folk traditions, and artists like Tim Hecker and Pauline Oliveros, she uses field recordings, vocalizations, and various whistles to craft soundscapes that are both immersive and expressive.
Juliana Day is also co-founder of the Emergence Collective, a 30-member Sheffield-based ensemble that performs live, improvised minimalism, as well as live improvised scores for silent films. Her unique approach to music captures the essence of transition and change, each piece an invitation to reflect on the beauty of life’s interludes.
