Josh Allen’s outrageous performance for the Buffalo Bills against the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday may have just won him the MVP award as he continued his remarkable season.
In a thrilling encounter at the SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Los Angeles, the 28-year-old quarterback broke two NFL records despite his side falling to a 44-42 loss to end their seven-game winning run brought to a dramatic end at the hands of their NFC West hosts.
Not only did Allen complete 22 out of 37 passes for 342 yards, scoring three touchdowns, he also rushed for 82 yards, scoring another three touchdowns from 10 carries. This feat made Allen the first QB in NFL history to score three passing TDs and three rushing TDs in a single game.
Not only did Allen set a personal NFL record, but he also broke a previous record held by former Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, as reported by the Buffalo Bills’ PR account on X (formerly Twitter).
“Josh Allen connects with Khalil Shakir on the 51 yard TD,” the account wrote. “That marks Allen’s 23rd game with 2+ passing TDs & 1+ rushing TDs, which establishes a new NFL record surpassing Cam Newton (22).”
While the Bills didn’t secure victory, Allen’s historic performance will be etched in the NFL annals forever. As Lamar Jackson and Saquon Barkley present strong cases for the MVP title, Allen’s outstanding game against the Rams could well be the crowning argument for his candidacy.
Despite his main rival playing for the Philadelphia Eagles, Allen’s MVP credentials should be solidified after his display against the Rams, with his performance in Week 14 not only epitomising what it means to be a team’s most valuable player, but also being the icing on the cake of what has already been an MVP-worthy season for him.
Over 13 games, Allen has completed 64.1% of his passes (252/393) for 3,033 passing yards, with 23 passing touchdowns and just five interceptions. As a runner, he has contributed an additional 416 yards and nine rushing touchdowns to his impressive 2024 campaign.
While the Bills have several areas to improve as a team, particularly their defence, Allen’s case for MVP should only strengthen following his dynamic performance against the Rams in Week 14.
