Jamie Perrett
Age Of Reason
Out 20 November 2024
Jamie is the son of Peter Perrett, the man who wrote ‘Another Girl, Another Planet’, arguably one of the greatest rock songs ever written. Consequently he has a lot to live up to. His guitar-playing on, and production of his fathers ‘The Cleansing’ album shows that he is a hugely talented fellow in his own right. This is the first of a trilogy of solo songs he is releasing…
And it’s fucking great.
What doesn’t kill you / Teaches you a lesson
Jamie was in an early line-up of Babyshambles after all, and this is his most ‘punk-rock’ moment since then.
His later bands, Love Minus Zero, were ska-punk-Dylan – and Strangefruit – very sophisticated torch-song drama. Then he was pivotal. working with Peter on his resurrection albums, whilst releasing the occasional brilliant song, like Poetic Justice and Angel of Santiago. So it’s cool that, at last, he can return to making his own music. And this first one is a rip-snorter. A great song. The most hard-edged thing he has done.
Opening with a searing guitar riff which hits the ground running and hooks you in from the first note, ‘Age of Reason’ is 2 and a half minutes of unstoppable urgency and reckless abandon which leaves you buzzing long after it’s over.

The band it immediately reminded me of was one of the great lost UK ‘Grunge’ bands of the 1990’s Stony Sleep, who I always liked as they had something a bit The Only Ones about them. Which is ironic.
Recorded at 123 Studios in Peckham and produced by Jamie himself, ‘Age of Reason’ was pretty much recorded all live – retaining its aggression and raw perfection.
‘Age of Reason’ was originally conceived in 2021 – and reflects Jamie’s disillusionment with the chaos around us. The song describes the division, paranoia, and ignorance we often descend to in current times.
Feels like we are getting closer
To some kind of judgment day
Just try to treasure every moment
That we have left along the way
An EP is planned for the Spring of 2025 and an album which promises to have ‘ an even darker edge to his songwriting as he delves into themes of his childhood—abuse, neglect, fractured relationships, and the complexities of growing up amid broken promises. Jamie’s music blends melodic rock with raw, infectious energy, resonating with vulnerability and honesty that capture his life story. It will be no ordinary rock record—it’s a testament to resilience, talent, and the unfiltered truth of growing up on the edge of rock and roll.
Age of Reason is remarkable and the next two songs over the coming months are equally inspirational. Inevitably his work will always be compared to his fathers, but you get the feeling that these latest songs are a great leap forward for Jamie, whose talents are his own rather than inherited.
Jamie plays a live show at Paper Dress Vintage in Hackney, London on Nov 22nd
