Dark undertow and pure dance energy
I have rarely heard a song that builds suspense as skilfully as ‘Confession’ by Hushed Lullabies. The first few seconds are still restrained, almost ominously quiet, and that’s exactly what creates a special sense of anticipation. This tension is intensified by the lively bassline, which literally cries out to break loose. When the chorus kicks in at 0:44, it’s like a tidal wave of energy is released. This explosion really pumps up the dance floor – exactly what I’m looking for in a good darkwave track.
I was particularly impressed by the synth melody at the end of the chorus, which I perceive as a ‘drop’ effect. It’s a detail that makes the song special to me and is instantly catchy. The melody gives the track a certain lightness that contrasts excitingly with the otherwise dark atmosphere. Sven Müller’s (Hushed Lullabies) mix of powerful, dark sounds and gripping beats can be fully felt here. For me, ‘Confession’ impressively shows how lively and danceable darkwave can be. Although the track also drifts slightly towards electro rock.
The vocals surprise with their variability and manage to charge every line of text with a tangible emotion. “Forgive me, mother. For I have sinned.” – this beginning of the lyrics has an intense pull and transports me into a kind of dark ritual in which the themes of forgiveness and atonement are unfolded on a musical level.
For me, the guitars are a small point of criticism – they add an interesting extra layer to the song, but I find them overpowering at times, especially because I prefer a stronger focus on the synthesiser. Nevertheless, this in no way diminishes the strength of ‘Confession’ as a whole.

Lyrics of “Hushed Lullabies – Confession”
Forgive me mother.
For I have sinned.
The beat of the priestess.
Has brought us again.
This space of devotion.
Where humanity ends.
Disintegration is how we ascend.
I feel my self dissolve away.
I’ve said everything I had to say.
Confession’s over, just let me stay.
I feel my self dissolve away.
I’ve danced each of my sins today.
I’m glad it’s over, but let me stay.
Forgive me mother
For I am blessed
Body and mind torn asunder
Death I carress.
A heart still beating
fell from your hands.
stilettos piercing
in their trance.
I feel my self dissolve away.
I’ve said everything I had to say.
Confession’s over, just let me stay.
I feel my self dissolve away.
I’ve danced each of my sins today.
I’m glad it’s over, but let me stay.
