Arsenal-linked striker Viktor Gyokeres was on target again for Sporting CP as he continued his fine run of form for the Portuguese giants. The Gunners have been linked with a series of talismen with Mikel Arteta looking to strengthen his attacking options.
Arsenal’s struggles in front of goal have been laid bare this season after a number of high-profile injury issues have saw the likes of Gabriel Jesus, Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli spend a prolonged period on the sidelines.
Their set-piece prowess was praised at the beginning of the season but Arsenal’s threat from deadball situations has diminished in recent weeks. But despite the injury struggles, the likes of Mikel Merino have stepped up to be on target for the Gunners.
Ahead of a busy summer of speculation, Gyokeres was on target once again for Sporting during their 1-1 draw with Braga.
The Sweden international’s goal looked set to be the difference against the Champions League contenders, however Afonso Patrao’s equaliser three minutes from time denied the Portuguese giants the opportunity to move level on points with Benfica.
In all competitions this season, the 26-year-old has a whopping 44 goals in an as many games, contributing ten assists and on Monday, he showed a new side to his goalscoring range.
Gyokeres’ free-kick did hand them the perfect start as he fired low, under the wall and into the bottom corner.
In a social media message after the draw, he posted to his Instagram story: “Let’s go [lion emoji].”
Arsenal’s new sporting director Andrea Berta is said to be an admirer of Gyokeres as they face a summer of intense links and speculation over a move.
It was reported in the Portuguese press last week that the Swede prefers a move to Arsenal over Manchester United, the other team reportedly in the battle for the striker.
And recently, Sporting head coach Rui Borges failed to rule out a move isn’t on the cards for the 26-year-old in the future after lauding his displays.
“Viktor is a player… I think there are no words: it is unlikely that another player of his quality will emerge in our league over the next few years.
“He is clearly above average.
“Sporting recognised his talent, and here we are. Fortunately, we have him at Sporting.
“We must make the most of the time we have with him because he is truly exceptional.
“I have said this before, and I will continue to say it: he brings a lot to the team, and his teammates are aware of what he contributes, which is why they look for him during games.
“The collective effort also plays a role, as no one can succeed alone. Viktor is a game-changer, and he will continue to be, whether with us or elsewhere. His quality is undeniable; it is phenomenal.”
