Ghost have set out to recapture some of the glory of the concert and album experience of old with their recently launched ‘Skeletour‘. The multi-platinum occult rock band’s decision to actively enforce a ‘a phone-free experience‘ inside most sections of the venues they are hitting on the trek may have divided fans, but it’s also allowed the group to generate some intrigue and mystery often lacking in the modern world of immediate access.
Bands like Tool have infamously taken a similar approach over the years. However, while Tool‘s live performances often rely on elaborate digital visual projection and lighting to accompany their aural performance, Ghost present their shows in a far more theatrical fashion, with segments and stage production that could easily be diluted with a hastily filmed clip.
In light of little to no footage expected to leak out from the trek, most fans will be going into the experience blind when it comes to stage production, costumes and more. The added lack of digital distraction in the audience is also hoped to keep fans more engaged.
But as this week has shown, it’s also allowed the band to play deeper into the nostalgia of the 80s and 90s, as seen with their own newly launched spoof of MTV‘s beloved heavy metal show ‘Headbangers Ball‘.
The first episode of their take on that show, ‘Ghoulbangers Ball‘, went up online tonight (see below) and showcases the tour’s sold out kickoff date that took place in Manchester, England this past Tuesday, April 15th. The setlist for that show did make it out online.
The ‘Skeletour‘ is being staged around the upcoming April 25th release of Ghost‘s new studio album “Skeletá“. Further cashing in on the 80s and 90s nostalgia with this album cycle, the band have also set out to hold an in-person midnight album launch for “Skeletá“.
