"France Holds Breath as Mbappé's Return Remains Uncertain After Nose Injury at Euro 2024"
Kylian Mbappé’s injury was the main focus at Euro 2024 on Tuesday as French soccer chief Philippe Diallo outlined the timeline for his return. After breaking his nose in a collision with Austria defender Kevin Danso, Mbappé is expected to miss Friday’s game against the Netherlands in Leipzig as a precaution. This break will allow the staff to source and fit a protective mask for the Real Madrid forward. France will complete its Group D schedule against Poland in Dortmund next Tuesday.
Mbappé was taken to a Düsseldorf hospital for X-rays that confirmed the broken nose and didn’t return to the team’s hotel until after 3 a.m. Diallo addressed the speculation, stating that further evaluation and treatment were ongoing. If surgery had been required, Mbappé would have missed the rest of the tournament. However, his condition allows for several recovery options in the coming days.
France’s opening game victory positions them well for the knockout stage, providing additional flexibility. Diallo expressed optimism about Mbappé’s recovery, stating, “The news from the doctors is more positive than not. We are fortunate that he doesn’t need surgery.”
Olivier Giroud is expected to start against the Netherlands in place of Mbappé. Giroud acknowledged the mixed feelings within the squad, saying, “We are a little bit disappointed because of Kylian. I wish that he recovers as soon as possible.” Defender Jules Kounde added, “He is a very important player, our captain. If we lose Kylian, that will make a huge difference for the team.” If France defeats the Netherlands without Mbappé, making them favorites to top the group, it is unlikely he will be risked in the third game.
