Former Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale has been told he would be a better option at Manchester United than Andre Onana.
David Raya’s move to Arsenal on loan from Brentford last season saw Ramsdale shut out of the starting XI under Mikel Arteta. When Raya’s loan was made permanent this summer, the Englishman decided to make the move to Southampton at the end of August in a £25million deal to give him regular first-team football.
And reports in The Sun claim that United have been keeping a close eye on Ramsdale recently. It is claimed that the Red Devils see him as a solid signing for Ruben Amorim. The report also mentions a £25m release clause, which has caught the attention of several clubs.
The interest in Ramsdale comes after a series of high-profile mistakes this season from current United No. 1 Onana. The ex-Inter Milan shot-stopper was responsible for both Lyon goals during last week’s 2-2 draw in United’s Europa League quarterfinal first-leg match.
And former Rangers boss Ally MCcoist and ex-Sky Sports presenter Jeff Stelling have had their say on reports that Ramsdale could be a potential summer replacement for United’s under-fire goalkeeper.
“I don’t think it’d be daft at all,” McCoist told talkSPORT. “I don’t fancy Onana to be honest with you, I’m not sure he’s of the class Manchester United need as a goalkeeper moving forward.
“The squad’s needing a dramatic overhaul and that wouldn’t be the daftest move.” Stelling added: “Ramsdale’s played at the top level. He’s played for England, he’s played for Arsenal, and he’s not going to want to play in the Championship with Southampton.”
McCoist replied.: “No, that’s for sure. I’d be staggered if he starts next year at Southampton. I don’t think he’ll be there next season in the Championship.”
As a result of them dropping back down to the Championship, Arsenal have been denied a £1million windfall with that clause included in Ramsdale’s move to St Mary’s Stadium.
In the wake of losing to Spurs, the 26-year-old penned an emotional message on Instagram, a post that was liked by several Arsenal stars. With it clear his former teammates are keeping an eye on his progress, a return to Arsenal has been suggested.
