Enzo Maresca is expected to make wholesale changes for Chelsea’s Conference League quarter-final first-leg tie with Legia Warsaw this evening.
The Blues head coach has made a minimum of six changes for every European match the west Londoners have played in this season and tonight could see something similar. At the weekend, Maresca benched a few key players, namely Nicolas Jackson and Cole Palmer, for the draw against Brentford given Chelsea’s back-to-back Premier League games in less than 72 hours.
It is now a decision on whether he prioritises this evening’s European action or Sunday’s home match with Ipswich Town in the league, especially because it is a similar turnaround from last week. With Chelsea now in the last eight of the Conference League, though, logic would suggest Maresca will start to pick stronger sides as the Blues look to get their hands on the European trophy for the first time.
It would also be the first major honour since Maresca took over as head coach last summer – adding even more significance. So, what will the Italian do in terms of his personnel for this evening’s tie at the Marshall Jozef Pilsudski’s Municipal Stadium? Below, Bobby Vincent tries to find the answer…
