Ethel Cain’s Preacher’s Daughter makes its entrance at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Alternative Albums chart dated April 19, nearly three years after the initial release of the album, her debut.
Preacher’s Daughter secured 39,000 equivalent album units in the U.S. for the week ending April 10, as reported by Luminate. Out of that total, 37,000 units came from album sales, resulting in a No. 1 debut on the all-genre Top Album Sales chart.
Most of its sales are from vinyl editions, since Preacher’s Daughter benefits from its inaugural vinyl release, 35 months after it originally debuted on May 12, 2022. This has also led to it debuting at No. 1 on the Vinyl Albums chart.
Cain is the first artist to top the Top Alternative Albums chart in their initial appearance since Olivia Rodrigo’s Guts launched at the top of the Sept. 23, 2023, list. However, since Rodrigo’s album was not her debut, Cain is the first to achieve this feat with a first release since The Smile, whose A Light for Attracting Attention, debuted in July 2022.
Preacher’s Daughter also debuts at No. 2 on the Top Rock & Alternative Albums and Top Rock Albums charts, while on the all-genre Billboard 200, it enters at No. 10.
Alongside its album sales, Preacher’s Daughter also achieved a total of 2.8 million official U.S. streams for the week ending April 10.
This chart activity marks Cain’s debut, primarily focused on Preacher’s Daughter, but she also makes her first appearance on the Billboard Artist 100 chart at No. 4.
Cain followed up Preacher’s Daughter with the nine-track ambient/drone project Perverts earlier this year, and she also has a new album, Willoughby Tucker, I’ll Always Love You, set to come out in 2025.
