There can’t be many better ways to start your life in the NFL than how Tristan Wirfs did.
While the 26-year-old entered the NFL in 2020 during the COVID-19 hit season, being drafted 13th overall by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Wirfs became teammates during his rookie year with the legendary Tom Brady, who moved to Florida that offseason following his storied run with the New England Patriots.
After having won six Super Bowl titles with the Patriots, Brady added another ring to his collection, claiming his seventh title with the Buccaneers in 2021. That saw Wirfs, who has been one of the NFL’s premier tackles since he entered the league, become a Super Bowl champion in his first season. Nowadays, Wirfs is Baker Mayfield’s blindside protector for the Buccaneers. And recently, the two-time first-team All-Pro appeared on Erin Andrews and Charissa Thompson’s ‘Calm Down’ podcast.
The two former FOX Sports broadcasters held a show for their podcast down in Tampa at the ‘She is Football Summit,’ with Wirfs appearing as a guest. And during the show, Wirfs aimed a sly joke at his former quarterback, before immediately retracting it.
With Wirfs having entered the NFL in 2020, a season which saw the league implement a vast number of safety protocols to prevent the spread of COVID-19 across facilities, Andrews began talking about how strange it must have been for the Tampa Bay star to become a Buccaneers – and Brady’s teammate.
“[It] is bananas when you think about how different that season was for you as a rookie to come in with how bizarre it all was, and oh by the way, Tom Brady was your quarterback and don’t let him get hurt,” said Andrews.
That prompted Wirfs to reply: “Yeah, Tom was here too, yeah, they were like don’t let anybody touch him. I was like alright, I’ll try my best. I’ll try my best, he’s fragile, he’s old.”
The old remarks about Brady, who is 47, immediately sparked intense laughter from the crowd, prompting Wirfs to launch it to damage control. “Not that old! Not that old! Not that old!” said Wirfs.
Andrews then interjected: “Tristan, he’s a year older than me, calm down” to which the Tampa tackle replied: “He’s like two years younger than my mom. Sorry, sorry, sorry.”
Thompson then added: “He says that as he shines his Super Bowl ring so you’re good.”
