Erin Andrews has opened up on the importance of getting checkups following her cervical cancer diagnosis in 2016. This is long before her ‘pre-cancer’ concern on her top lip.
The popular sportscaster underwent successful surgery for the issue and is currently cancer-free but recently revealed that it was a random checkup at the doctors which happened to save her life. Now, she is encouraging both men and women to avoid dismissing any medical issues, just in case it proves to be something worse.
Speaking on the latest episode of the “Calm Down with Erin and Charissa” podcast, which she co-hosts with best friend and former Fox Sports colleague Charissa Thompson, Andrews deepdived into her own medical history to express the importance of people learning to properly look after themselves.
The 46-year-old revealed that she now gets tested every six months because she is afraid of getting cancer again, and even opened up on the emotional trauma her first visit that left her having a panic attack in the doctor’s office.
In a clip uploaded to the podcast’s X (formerly Twitter) account, Andrews said: “People are afraid to go to the doctor because they don’t want bad news. People are afraid to get checkups. Just a random checkup is how I found out I had cervical cancer. Unfortunately, you need to go to the doctor so your problem doesn’t get worse – if you even have one.
“I now go get mammograms like, every six months, because I am so paranoid about what I went through with cervical cancer. And I just feel like you’re hearing more and more about breast cancer and so forth, and it’s awful. I had a moment where I had to go back for a checkup, and I literally had a panic attack in the office because they were making me wait, making me wait.
“Finally, I started crying. I told the lady at the front desk, ‘can you please just get me in a room because I’m freaking out?’ And the doctor walked in and he said to me ‘once you’ve already gone through cancer, that cherry is kind of popped. You are forever worried that something is going to get popped up.’ You need to go.”
Earlier this month, Andrews revealed on another episode of the podcast that she has been dealing with a “pre-skin cancer situation” on her upper lip. The NFL sideline reporter explained that she has been experiencing a lot of pain of late and even “wanted to pass out” over the recent health scare, which comes almost a decade after she was diagnosed with cervical cancer.
Andrews, who is also ESPN’s former College GameDay host, became a voice on women’s health issues after announcing her cervical cancer diagnosis in September 2016. She has also been publicly open about her nine-year in vitro fertilization (IVF) journey, which eventually led to her and her husband, former NHL player Jarret Stoll, taking the surrogate route in order to have children.
