Ed Sheeran Reveals Release Date For New Album ‘Play,’ Shares New Single ‘Old Phone’
Global pop superstar Ed Sheeran has announced that his highly-anticipated eighth album, Play, will be released on September 12th via Gingerbread Man Records/Atlantic Records.
In addition, Sheeran has released “Old Phone,” a new single from the forthcoming album.
“Old Phone” was co-produced by Sheeran with Ilya Salmanzadeh and Blake Slatkin. Sheeran had earlier released the album’s lead single “Azizam,” and he recently launched a nostalgic Instagram account @TeddysOldPhone with photos from his old phone.
The new album was first confirmed by the singer, songwriter in March, when he made an appearance on “The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon” and shared the title for the project.
“Play was an album that was made as a direct response to the darkest period of my life,” says Sheeran. “Coming out of all of that I just wanted to create joy and technicolour, and explore cultures in the countries I was touring.”
“I made this record all over the world, finished it in Goa, India, and had some of the most fun, explorative creative days of my life,” he adds. “It’s a real rollercoaster of emotions from start to finish, it encapsulates everything that I love about music, and the fun in it, but also where I am in life as a human, a partner, a father.”
