Donald Trump will be in attendance at the NCAA Wrestling Championships on Saturday and is expected to travel on Air Force One for the highly-anticipated event.
The president confirmed to reporters outside the White House on Friday that he would be traveling to Philadelphia for “the big fight”, where he will watch Penn State try to make history by closing out the championship after gaining a substantial lead of 90.5 over second-place Nebraska at 62.5 and third-place Oklahoma State at 61.0.
However, it will be no ordinary fly-in for the 78-year-old, who also attended Super Bowl LIX and the Dayton 500 on consecutive Sundays last month. Instead, Trump is expected to make the 140-mile trip from Washington DC aboard Air Force One, the president’s specially designated aircraft.
OutKick co-founder Clay Travis broke the news this week with a post on X (formerly Twitter), in which he said that he would be traveling “with” the president on “Air Force One” to the championships. Press secretary Karoline Leavitt seemed to confirm that would be the case by replying: “See you this weekend!”
On Friday, the White House confirmed that Trump would attend the event, before Travis uploaded to a photo to social media of him looking rather smug and giving a thumbs up to the camera in front of Airt Force One. An accompanying caption read: “Pretty cool Friday.”
Trump the confirmed the news himself, saying: “We’re going to the big fight. The reason I’m going is in Philadelphia. They have the NCAA, world, wrestling for college. And I’ve always supported the wrestlers. So I want to support them. These are the great college wrestlers from the various schools. I think Penn State is leading, and Nebraska is in second place right now. And a lot of good things.”
According to FOX News Digital, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, is also set to join Trump in Philadelphia. Jordan was a noted wrestling champion during his high school and university days, winning the NCAA Division I men’s wrestling title twice whilst at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He later joined Ohio State University’s wrestling program from 1987 to 1995 as an assistant coach.
Also part of Trump’s traveling party is Sen. Dave McCormick, R-Pa., who previously confirmed the president’s attendance at the event with his own post on X. “I’m thrilled to be in Philadelphia this weekend with [Trump] for the [NCAA Wrestling] Championship,” he wrote. “I grew up wrestling in small towns across PA and at West Point. It taught me grit, resilience, and hard work.”
The wrestling championships have made their return to Philadelphia’s Wells Fargo Center for the first time in 14 years, when Penn State took advantage of playing on home soil to win it all in 2011. Since then, the Nittany Lions have dominated proceedings, winning each of the last three titles.
