‘Did He Just..?’ – Denny Hamlin Reveals Shocking Details on NASCAR Legend Richard Childress’ Wild Antics
After the NASCAR Cup Series race at Homestead-Miami Speedway, Denny Hamlin said Richard Childress took his competitive spirit off the track and onto the highway. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver shared a wild story about a police escort and some high-speed driving.
Denny Hamlin Spills the Crazy Story of Richard Childress’ Post-Race Highway Mayhem
It’s pretty common for NASCAR teams to get police escorts while traveling, and Joe Gibbs Racing had one set up for their trip home after the Homestead-Miami race. But things didn’t go as planned. Hamlin’s podcast co-host, Jared Allen, was driving when they lost the escort. Moments later, they saw Richard Childress force his way into the high-speed convoy.
“Let me tell you. Let me tell you how important it is to not lose the draft,” Hamlin said on his “Actions Detrimental” podcast. “Richard Childress, okay, Richard Childress was not part of this escort. He was part of the vehicles that needed to move out of [the way]. The police got him to move out of the way.
“Well, somebody, within Joe Gibbs Racing [left] a gap, and Richard says, ‘Well, I’m joining this escort whether you guys like it or not.’ And he forced his way in. Well, this employee says, ‘No you can’t just join in,’ so he pulled up beside him. What did Richard Childress do?
“He hung a left, destroyed the side of the car. He did, he turned left, I witnessed, we were right behind it. I’m like, ‘Oh my god, did he just, he did.’ And I was like, ‘Jared pull up, pull up to the car.’ The right side of the JGR car was destroyed, and Richard, he just stayed in the gas. I mean, hung a left on them and just doored the s**t out of our car. I couldn’t believe it.”
Hamlin’s career has had its share of close calls, rivalries, and challenges — but this was next-level. The car wasn’t just a machine — it was a symbol of their hard work. Now, it was gone — “destroyed” in a fit of rage, with a police escort watching.
The tension between Hamlin and the Childress camp isn’t new. Even their crew chiefs have had run-ins. After Richard Boswell of RCR talked about Goodyear’s option tires on SiriusXM Radio, JGR’s competition director Chris Gabehart fired back on X, calling out Boswell, “Summary: He’s a fan of getting to participate for the win via the Caution Lottery.”
Boswell made his comments while supporting the option tires. He even suggested replacing the primary tires with an even softer version. Gabehart’s response pointed out how Austin Dillon, Childress’ grandson, doesn’t always have the fastest car fighting for wins. Instead, Dillon tries to save tires and hopes for a late caution to move up. It’s a different strategy from how some of the sport’s top drivers race.
The two sides also clashed at Richmond in 2024, when Dillon took out Hamlin for the win. Fans weren’t happy, and NASCAR stepped in — pulling Dillon’s playoff spot after the race.
