Sources inform ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler that there is mutual interest between the Dallas Cowboys and free agent running back Ezekiel Elliott for a potential reunion.
Although a formal agreement has yet to be reached, both parties have expressed openness to the idea.
Dallas is particularly impressed with Elliott’s performance during the latter part of the 2023 season with the New England Patriots. In his 17 regular-season appearances, Elliott assumed a significant workload, especially in the final five weeks following Rhamondre Stevenson’s injury. Stevenson, the Patriots’ primary rusher, was sidelined due to a high-ankle sprain.
Last season, Elliott, who will turn 29 on July 22, signed a one-year contract with the Patriots worth $3 million in August. This move came after spending the first seven years of his career with the Cowboys before being released in March.
Despite facing challenges with New England’s offensive line, Elliott managed to play 51% of the offensive snaps. He concluded the season as the team’s leading rusher, amassing 642 yards on 184 carries, with an average of 3.5 yards per carry, and scoring three touchdowns. Additionally, he recorded 51 receptions for 313 yards, averaging 6.1 yards per catch, and securing two touchdowns.
Standing at 6 feet tall and weighing 226 pounds, Elliott was drafted fourth overall by the Cowboys in the 2016 NFL Draft. He has twice led the league in rushing during his initial three seasons (1,631 yards in 2016, 1,434 yards in 2018) and has earned Pro Bowl honors three times. Over the course of his career, Elliott has accumulated 8,904 rushing yards and 71 touchdowns, along with 356 receptions for 2,649 yards and 14 touchdowns.
