Two former LSU football stars could be potential fits for the New Orleans Saints in next week’s NFL Draft. LSU’s top two draft prospects, tackle Will Campbell and tight end Mason Taylor, both met with the Saints during the pre-draft process.
Several analysts rank Campbell as the top offensive lineman in the draft. There’s a chance Campbell is picked before the Saints are on the clock at No. 9, but if he’s available, several Saints’ mock drafts slot Campbell to New Orleans.
Per the Saints website, the only position mocked to New Orleans more than tackle is quarterback. If the Saints opt to continue building the roster before adding a QB, Campbell makes sense. He’s a three-year SEC starter with the skills to play tackle or on the interior.
As the draft moves to day two, Taylor is a name to eye in the second and third round. As the NFL increases its usage of 12 personnel, offenses are looking for complete tight ends like Taylor who can block and be a threat in the vertical passing game.
Taylor was the most productive tight end in LSU history and was a key part of efficient ground games thanks to what he could do as a blocker. According to ESPN, Taylor is the No. 4 ranked tight end in the class.
The Saints already have four ex-LSU players on the roster: Tyrann Mathieu, Davon Godchaux, Foster Moreau, and Clyde-Edwards Helaire.
That’s not the only connection as LSU starting quarterback Garrett Nussmeier’s dad, Doug Nussmeier, is the Saints offensive coordinator. New Orleans’ interest in Campbell and Taylor is something to monitor when the draft gets underway in Green Bay.
