Cameron Sutton, the veteran cornerback sought by police in Florida for his alleged involvement in a domestic violence incident, surrendered himself on Sunday, as confirmed by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.
The search for Sutton began on March 7 when an arrest warrant was issued after authorities responded to a call in Lutz, Florida, where Sutton was accused of assaulting a woman before fleeing the scene.
Despite earlier promises from Sutton’s attorney, he turned himself in six days later and was subsequently booked into the Orient Road Jail in Tampa.
Sheriff Chad Chronister emphasized the seriousness of the offense, stating, “Domestic violence has no place in our community, and no one is above the law here in Hillsborough County.”
Sutton faces a charge of domestic battery by strangulation, a third-degree felony punishable by up to five years in prison. Evidence of injuries on the woman’s body has been reported by the sheriff’s office.
The 29-year-old Sutton, who joined the Detroit Lions in 2023 on a three-year, $33 million contract after six seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, was released by the Lions on March 21 after news of the warrant surfaced.
According to Lions team president Rod Wood, Sutton was at the team’s workout facility when they learned about the warrant. The team advised him to seek legal counsel and surrender. Following discussions, the Lions decided to release Sutton from the team.
