The top team in the country has fallen again as No. 19 Clemson took down No. 1 Tennessee, 4-3, with some ninth-inning magic.
The Tigers and Lady Vols were tied at three apiece when Clemson’s Macey Cintron, slotted fourth in the batting order, came up to the plate to lead off the ninth inning. Tennessee pitcher Karlyn Pickens walked Cintron, putting the game-winning run on the plate. Out came Cintron and in came Ava Wilson to pinch run with the game at stake.
A fielding error and a ground out later, and now Wilson was in scoring position at third base with just one out. Clemson’s Taylor Pipkins was up to bat next, with a chance to knock off the nation’s top team at stake. Pipkins hit a sac fly to left field and in came Wilson for the go-ahead run.

Yet, the Tigers weren’t done. They still needed to shut down Tennessee’s bats to keep the upset in the bottom of the ninth. The Lady Vols picked up some late momentum with runners on first and second with just one out before Clemson could close the game for good. What happened next kept the Tuesday magic going as a double-play secured Clemson’s first win over a No. 1-ranked team in program history and just the fifth-ever such win by a women’s program in school history.
