Chelsea have confirmed that Wesley Fofana will miss the remainder of the season because of another hamstring injury.
The France international missed Thursday’s 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur with a muscular problem, as revealed by Enzo Maresca and now, in a club statement, it has been announced the new issue required surgery to fix.
“The club can confirm that defender Wesley Fofana has today undergone successful hamstring surgery,” an update began.
“Wesley was assessed by specialists this week after the 24-year-old suffered an injury of the muscle.
“Following that assessment, it was concluded that an operation would be required.
“The 24-year-old will now begin his recovery and undergo rehabilitation with the club’s medical staff at Cobham over the coming weeks.
“Everyone at the club is fully focused on supporting Wesley in his recovery.”
Fofana had only recently returned from a lengthy absence due to an issue in the same area and he is set to end his third season at the club with just 14 appearances.
“Wes had a muscle problem a few days [ago], and we are waiting for more checks,” Maresca revealed on why he missed out and it is clear those checks have shown there is a problem.
In more positive news, Cole Palmer, Nicolas Jackson and Noni Madueke all returned from their respective injuries against Spurs.
Following on from that London derby victory, Chelsea make the short trip across the capital to face Brentford on Sunday.
After that, a two-legged tie against Legia Warsaw in the Conference League is on the horizon with a home clash against Ipswich Town sandwiched between those two European outings.
