As we approach 20 years since Fantômas‘ last full-length album, it would appear that the book on the experimental supergroup has effectively been shut. A bold amalgamation of the talents of vocalist, etc. Mike Patton (Faith No More, Mr. Bungle), guitarist/vocalist Buzz Osborne (Melvins, etc.), bassist/vocalist Trevor Dunn (Mr. Bungle, etc.) and drummer Dave Lombardo (Mr. Bungle, ex-Slayer, etc.), the collective last hit the stage in 2017 for a one-off show, their first since 2014.
In a newly published interview with Far Out, Osborne expressed his doubts about any future activity from the group. He stated of a potential reunion, “I think it’s very, very, very unlikely it’ll ever happen.” When pressed for further explanation, he added, “Well, you’d have to get Mike involved in it, and who knows what’s going through his head? I just don’t see it happening.”
Osborne also made mention in the interview that while he regularly keeps in contact with rest of the band, his relationship with Patton has apparently drifted over the years. Despite the apparent challenges posed in ever getting back together, Osborne feels a a return would likely be well-received, offering, “I think Fantômas would do really well, especially at this point; it’s been so long since we did anything. But I just can’t see it happening.”
