Bryan Gil has stated “everything has turned out great” after undergoing surgery on a knee injury. The Tottenham man is currently with Girona in Spain but it very much appears that he has already played the last game of his loan spell.
Making an immediate mark for Michel Sanchez’s team after returning to his homeland in July, Gil contributed with four goals and three assists in 32 games across all competitions prior to going under the knife. His last appearance for Girona came at Espanyol earlier this month as he played 76 minutes of the 1-1 draw, with the winger subsequently missing out on the matchday squad for last weekend’s draw at home to his former loan club Valencia.
Speaking to the media after the game, Girona boss Michel opened up on Gil’s absence and revealed that knee surgery was a possibility. “Bryan, as I said, has a knee injury and tomorrow he must speak to Dr. Cugat,” explained the Spaniard, as reported by Football Espana.
“We will see if an operation is necessary or not. If he has to have surgery, he could miss the entire season. But if not, this Sunday will be the last tests and we will see. Cugat will make the decision with the players. It doesn’t look good, although I think there is still a lack of evidence.”
Amid reports from Spain that Gil had sustained damage to the lateral ligament in his right knee and the meniscus, he has now had surgery to correct the issue. Taking to his Instagram account on Thursday afternoon, the Tottenham player provided an update for his fans. He penned: “Day one. Everything has turned out great. This is just one more step in the long road ahead.”
Tottenham duo Cristian Romero and Sergio Reguilon, as well as former Spurs midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, were just some of the players to leave messages for Gil. “Come on buddy, you’re going to come back stronger than ever. I love you brother,” wrote Romero. “Let’s go little brother” was the message from Reguilon.
The Spain international will return to Tottenham in the summer but it remains to be seen what his next move will be. A player clearly not in Ange Postecoglou’s thinking, Spurs ideally need to part with Gil for good during the summer transfer window as he will enter the final 12 months of his current deal come the start of July.
Gil has made 43 appearances for Tottenham since joining in the summer of 2021, with the attacker featuring for Valencia, Sevilla and Girona on loan during that period.
