Jarrad Branthwaite is reportedly insisting that Everton match the £160,000-a-week ($205,921.4) wage being offered by Manchester United as they prepare a new contract for the defender.
Everton has turned down two offers from United this summer for the 22-year-old. The Merseyside club have slapped a £70million ($90,090,630) price tag on the centre-back, a figure United have failed to meet, with their last bid coming in at £50million ($64,350,450).
Branthwaite established himself as a key player in Sean Dyche’s team last season and is predicted to have a bright future at both club and international level.
In recognition of this, Everton are eager to offer Branthwaite a new deal. The defender still has three years remaining on his current contract, which is said to be worth around £70,000-a-week.
According to the Daily Mail, discussions about increased figures are expected to take place at the end of the window, but Branthwaite is prepared to reject any new terms if Everton do not come close to matching United’s offer.
This potential impasse comes at a crucial time for Everton, who recently saw their latest takeover talks with Friedkin Group collapse, extending owner Fahrad Moshiri’s two-year attempt to sell the club.
Despite this setback, the club remains optimistic that new buyers will find a solution.
United had initially identified Branthwaite as a potential summer signing, but it seems they’ve taken a step back following sporting director Dan Ashworth’s recent chat with his Everton counterpart Kevin Thelwell. During the conversation, Everton reiterated their commitment to holding out for a fee closer to their £70million valuation.
Under the guidance of the club’s new minority owners, United have adopted a transfer policy that shies away from unnecessary spending on players. They forked out £52million for Leny Yoro, but are still in the market for a centre back, full-back, midfielder and forward depending on departures.
Branthwaite fits the bill for United’s defensive requirements, but Everton remain steadfast in their refusal to let their star defender go on the cheap. Despite this, rumours continue to circulate about Branthwaite’s future.
Pre-season training has kicked off at Everton, with Branthwaite rejoining his teammates.
In other news, Everton are busy getting their squad ready for the upcoming season, with hopes of finalising a loan deal for Napoli winger Jesper Lindstrom.
